The VP of Product Management, with a team of 4 PM's, is responsible for managing the P&L and overall product profitability as well as defining and tracking sales results for new product launches for a consumer durable product sold through distribution and retail.

You wil be responsible for determining end user and distribution customer needs. Develop new, innovative products and services, targeting 'Industry Firsts.' Similarly, through 'Voice of the Customer' activities and competitive benchmarking, partner with NPD and Operations to develop product line extensions. Develop volume and share goals by product line and track ongoing performance. Provide direction to sales, manufacturing, NPD, customer service, finance and marketing to execute plans and programs. Drive product development projects in support of new business development activities for the business across all channels.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following.

Full product management responsibility for multiple product lines and thousands of SKU's:
- Develop and maintain product profitability worksheets
- Establish specialty product price positioning; adjust through product life cycle
- Monitor competitive product developments and drive competitive benchmarking activities
- Make decisions on product line rationalization and provide suggested disposition on slow-moving and obsolete inventory
- Specification review and approval. Manage and approve all product changes

Leads product planning and definition to ensure the product delivers value to target customers, achieves portfolio objectives, brand positioning and channel segmentation/differentiation goals . Directs team to own the product throughout all stages of life cycle (conception, definition, development, launch and post-launch activities, maturity and transition)

Directs team to work with NPD project managers to successfully develop and launch new products and line extensions in alignment with product strategic and operating plans, including:
- Development of product features, benefits and performance specifications utilizing voice of customer input
- Managing within NPD process to ensure all required steps are properly executed
- Providing input for detailed financial analyses on all new product and capital procurement decisions

Works with Marketing managers to develop strategies and tactics for successful marketing of products, including new product launches and repositioning of current products
- Includes coordinating with Marketing to develop budget for product line marketing initiatives
- Includes supporting the development of channel marketing strategy, annual marketing plan, sales support programs and pull-through/demand generation activities to meet overall strategic objectives for channel market share, sales and profitability

Works with Sales managers to drive achievement of sales operating plan for product line

Ownership for training programs (for customers and internal sales people) to support the product line
- Includes design of content and managing execution of training

Conducts frequent customer visits, domestic and international, to evaluate market needs and opportunities; participates in customer councils and other 'Voice of the Customer' activities


Responsible for competitive and market research working with Market Research manager and sales team

Directs development of strategic product plans on annual basis

Leads development of operating plan for product line on annual basis

Evaluates requests for product changes, enhancements, etc. and makes decisions on such requests

Directs product team for Product Category. Members to include Finance, Marketing, Marketing Communications, Supply Chain/Logistics, Manufacturing, Operations and Sales


This position will have tactical and strategic responsibility for growing sales and profitability of the business through effective product line management, as well as proactive and timely delivery of new product development objectives.

Position directly impacts core business unit strategic objectives: 1) Innovation - Leverage new and existing capabilities to deliver differentiated, proprietary and customer-focused solutions; 2) Portfolio Management - Strengthen the product portfolio to be more structurally attractive; 3) Customer Value Creation - Deliver superior customer value through best-in-class product, service, selling tools and marketing programs; and 4) Market Leadership - Grow sales, share and profits through new channels, new customers and new markets. Further, the position will coordinate with and impact all other functional areas, including Sales, Logistics, Planning, Product Development, and Operations.


Qualifications

Education and/or Experience Bachelor's Degree in Marketing or Business; MBA preferred. Requires 10-15 years of progressive product management, marketing and new product development experience with previous P&L responsibility. Background in consumer durables, building materials or home improvement products industry highly desired.


Competencies Demonstrated capability in planning, organizing, integrating and measuring programs and projects. Strong problem solving, analytical and computer skills (Windows Word, Excel and PowerPoint). Must have the ability to work effectively and positively with all organizational levels, be proactive and an innovator. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Flexible, able to handle multiple projects at the same time.

Ability to travel - approximately 20 - 25%

Other Skills and Abilities Excellent knowledge of all products within a product family, company policies and practices. Thorough knowledge of long-range and operational planning techniques. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Able to operate as a matrix manager in coordinating people and technical resources from multiple areas of the company.

Requires excellent leadership and project management skills to set objectives and lead matrix organization in execution. Creative approach to problem solving and opportunity analysis required. Strong analytical skills with demonstrated experience in financial metrics used for decision-making. Process orientation for execution and improvement of process.Estimated Salary: $20 to $28 per hour based on qualifications.
